I rented a canoe for my dad and I to take out for the day while he was visiting. It was a highlight of his trip to the Kootenays. We had a 5/5 star experience with smiling otter and with Dan. The gear was in excellent condition and paddling on Slocan lake was stunning. Pick up of the equipment was easy and Dan was helpful with instructions for launching our boat. Dan was so great to chat to and very knowledgeable about the paddling and overnighting in the area. I highly recommend renting from Smiling Otter Canoe and Kayak.

My 75ish y.o. dad and I had an amazing 3-day trip on Slocan lake. In preparation for this trip, Daniel provided us with so much information, happy to answer the many questions we had, over phone and email. He is very knowledgable about the area, and shared lots on our shuttle drive to New Denver, where we started the trip. As such, we were well prepared and excited to go!
The gear is excellent, too. A Nelson, BC, made canoe that is light and fast, yet very stable. Great drybags, too.
On our last day the weather turned unexpectedly, and Daniel kept us in the loop about the local forecast.
Fond memories were made, and I would definitely recommend getting paddle gear from the Smiling Otter Canoe & Kayak. Also, Slocan Lake is gorgeous!
I hope to return one day!

We had a great experience renting a canoe for an overnight trip. Although appearing like a relaxed set up we were quickly shuttled to the lake and away paddling within half an hour. Great quality equipment and a beautiful place to explore, we had a campground to ourselves only accessible from the water. They went above and beyond - helping us with our flat car battery on return too!

Cannot say enough good things about Daniel and Smiling Otter.
We rented two canoes from them for a 4-day paddle down Slocan. Equipment was in great shape and included all safety gear, suggestions were clear and helpful, shuttling service was easy and on-time. Absolute professional service with a personal and friendly feel. Exactly what you want for this type of trip.
During our trip we ran into a bit of a tricky situation due to external factors unrelated to Smiling Otter. Despite this, Daniel took hours out of his day to go above and beyond to help us out and make our trip as good as possible. This was not required or expected, but again just speaks to the quality of human and quality of company.
If you're renting canoes or kayaks anywhere in the region, this has got to be by far and away the best option.

Jim and Lorraine are the best! This is a wonderful family owned business, operated by people who respect and love the place they live in. The boathouse is located right at the mouth of some truly beautiful paddling, however we rented a tandem kayak to go paddling some 30 minutes away towards one of many hiking trails in the Slocan region. They happily helped us load and cushion the boat on our van. When we returned they were having wine by the fire and invited us over for a drink. If you like stories about the wilderness, tree planting, or local history these are your people! Great hosts and great owners!

My experience with Smiling Otter was great!
From my initial phone call to when we hit the lake. Daniel was an absolute gem! He answered all my questions thoroughly and when I told him that we would be in the area for a couple days, he even provided some tips of places we could check out while there. The extra info he provided made our trip through BC even more memorable.
I am really thankful we were able to hit the lake mid October. Spending a day out on the water, with such beautiful fall weather was something special for my boyfriend and I. It was the highlight of our anniversary trip through BC.
We would love to come back, and hope to, sooner than later.

Wonderful experience and would recommend to everyone! Lorraine was incredibly kind, patient and informative upon our arrival and he shuttle is a nice touch the trek.
The slocan is amazingly beautiful; the boat access campgrounds were awesome!
